In North America this is more comparable to a large lawn of an estate then to a farm, but internationally the average farmer worldwide still farms less then 5 acres. Therefore on the global stage these urban are in no way too small to be effective and sustainable.

By 2050, millions of its citizens will be at increased risk from regular and extreme climatic events such as floods, droughts and tropical storms. To help reduce the impacts of these risks, this study provides HCMC’s government and private sector with projections of HCMC’s 2050 exposure in key sectors and areas, and proposes structural and nonstructural measures to build climate resilience in the city’s most vulnerable sectors and areas.

In order to confront the challenge of climate change as an opportunity rather than a threat, the City of Rotterdam has set up the Rotterdam Climate Proof programme. Rotterdam Climate Proof will make Rotterdam climate change resilient by 2025. Permanent protection and accessibility of the Rotterdam region are key elements. The central focus of the programme is to create extra opportunities to make Rotterdam a more attractive city in which to live, work, relax – and invest.
Trendsetting research, innovative knowledge development and a dynamic and decisive implementation of the suggested measures will result in strong economic incentives. Collaborating with prominent partners, Rotterdam will become an important innovative water knowledge city in the world, and an inspiring example to other delta cities.

Rotterdam’s Climate Adaptation Strategy (RAS)
Climate change resilience in Rotterdam will first and foremost involve sustainable protection against flooding in the areas inside and outside the levees. In addition to flood management, the city will have to focus on other ways to prepare for the consequences of climate change as well, such as higher incidence rates of heat waves, increased heavy precipitation, groundwater salinization, changing options for transport by water, and increased volatility of groundwater levels. What is essential for an adaptive strategy is that it is implemented proactively and that it can be adjusted to changing circumstances. The Rotterdam Climate Adaptation Strategy (RAS) clearly defines the measures that can be taken to climate proof the area.

DML has noticed that the Indonesian government has invited potential partners to take over the abandoned former forest areas. (A hard way to learn but at least they got the lessons). Yet, solutions need to made in a concrete action. If there are people or organizations or companies who are interested to invest in the barren forest areas for any ecologically sound agro-forestry projects, DML would be happy to facilitate to process. Given DML’s track record and our vast network in the country we will be a good option as your partner or simply act as an honest intermediary. Please contact us for any inquiry.

Thank you for visiting our web site.

This is the international version of our web site in English. Our classic web site can be found at http://www.dml.or.id/ in the Indonesian language.

DML addresses environmental problems surrounding industrial and urban development which include issues on industrial pollution, solid and non-toxic waste recycling and management, public policies, community empowerment and corporate social responsibility. DML’s experts and partners work closely with local authorities, civil society and industry to facilitate development of intelligent and practical proposals that demonstrate the viability of waste recycling business, the relationship between pollution prevention and increase productivity as well as corporate contributions towards environmental protection efforts and social improvements.

DML now stated that it was to pay more attention to so-called “brown” issues, those having to do with the effects of unsound industrial practices not only on the environment but more critically on the life of people in the major urban centres.

The consequence of this focus is that DML would now concentrate on assessing the actual practices of the urban community (i.e., industries, commerce, housing, etc.) and its impact on the environment. It would draw public attention to any of its shortcomings though support for research, knowledge management, and information dissemination (publication, training, capacity building etc.) if indeed some urban practices contributed to environmental degradation. DML’s latest Board meeting in January 29, 2009 has decided to focus DML upcoming activities on urban research and environmental issues related to climate change in the cities, which is cross-disciplinary and inter-sector.

A new strategy is currently being developed, to synergise DML’s vast network with international communities through the legacy of its founders, as well as to update its networks to mutually strengthen knowledge and actions given the more complex urban challenges in this present era.

DML is also a supporter of the Earth Charter Initiative, a global network of environmental organizations.
