Solid Waste Management
DML has been actively participating in the establishment of the Indonesian Network of Community Based Solid Waste Management (GTPS) under the auspices of the Working Group on Drinking Water and Sanitation (AMPL).
On top of ongoing support to variety of solid waste management activities in Indonesia, from campaign, training and promotion of solid waste recycling to the public and schools, to the technical workshop and partnership with companies on their recycling programmes (such as Aqua bottling water, Tetra Pak in the past years).
DML personnel is currently pioneering and actively involved and in the effort to establish a national institute for solid waste management training and certification, a joint programme with the Indonesian Association of Environmental Engineers (IATPI), the Indonesian Institute of Engineers (PII), Directorate General of Human Settlements (Cipta Karya), with the support from UN Habitat Indonesia.
Among other activities, DML personnel and associates since May 2010 until 2011 are involved in Municipal Solid Waste Management Training for 13 municipalities in Aceh Province. It is a program managed by UN Habitat and UNDP in Aceh. It is a series of multi-level training sessions, from the City Mayors and District Heads to the senior officials and technical staff / operators. It is intended to build a vision on clean and sustainable environment, properly managed solid waste, supported by capable and good planning and implementation in a coherent manner.
Such a comprehensive and muti-level training programme is the first of its kind in the country, and hopefully will be documented and replicated in the other provinces through the national government programmes. DML will be actively involved in the preparation and design of those training.
